The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has launched the Benevolent Fund, a charity organisation established in 2020 under revocable trusts, to provide bereavement support and other benefits to its members.
The Fund aims to provide bereavement support to members of the Fund, their spouses and children, provide support to a member who is on prolonged sick leave without pay or reduced pay, contribute to the education of the children and dependents of a deceased member or a member who is on prolonged sick leave without pay, support members in any other circumstances that the Trustees may find fit and deserving, and hold or acquire any real or immovable property for the benefit of the beneficiaries.
Support is provided to members and beneficiaries in the event of the member’s death, bereavement of spouse or children (up to 4), or incapacitation of the member.
CPA Josephine Okui Ossiya, the President of ICPAU said, “The Benevolent Fund reflects our commitment to fostering a sense of community and solidarity within our profession, ensuring that we stand by each other during life’s most challenging moments.”
The Fund will be resourced from annual contributions by members, endowment contributions, investment income, donations, grants, and other sources. Members are required to contribute UGX 50,000 annually, and benefits are available only to those who have been members for at least one year.
In recognition of substantial contributions, the Fund offers special honours, namely, the George W. Egaddu Fellow and the Pius K. Bahemuka Fellow. As a reward, recipients of these titles get additional support in the event of bereavement.
Membership to the Fund is open to members and staff of ICPAU, and beneficiaries include the member, their legally recognised spouse, and up to four biological or adopted children.
The Benevolent Fund is governed by a Board of Trustees, which comprises CPA Harriet Kiwanuka as Chairperson, CPA George W. Egaddu, CPA Esther Kakuba, CPA Etheza Tukashaba, CPA Joseph Gonzaga Kalinda as Treasurer, and CPA Derick Nkajja as Secretary.
