The Tuition Providers Masterclass commenced on 13 June 2024 at Hotel Africana, bringing together tutors from all over the country.
The training aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of tuition providers, focusing on student-centred learning environments, diverse pedagogy approaches, and insights for delivering CPA papers.
Mr Jimmy Luyima, a renowned educator from Kyambogo University set the tone for the masterclass with his insightful presentation.
He emphasised the importance of involving students in the learning process, making them an integral part of the lessons.
He defined pedagogy as the art and science of teaching, drawing from the Greek roots "Peidi" meaning child and "Ago" meaning guide.
He also highlighted the distinction between pedagogy and andragogy, the latter being the practice of teaching adult learners, which is based on self-directed and independent learning methods.
Mr Luyima encouraged participants to be patient and understanding, as each student learns differently.
He shared a wise saying, "Don't be so quick to judge, you never know the truth," reminding tutors to approach their learners with empathy and compassion.
Dr David Henry Ngobi, another presenter from Kyambogo University stressed the significance of setting objectives for teachers.
These objectives could be short-term targets, achievable in a short time, and applicable to various aspects of life, institutional administration, family, and more.
The masterclass was launched by CPA Dr. Albert Otete, Chair, Education and Research Committee at the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU). Mr. John Bosco Ntangaare, the Director Education represented the ICPAU Secretary/CEO CPA Derick Nkajja. Mr Ntangaare expressed gratitude to all participants and hoped that they would gain valuable knowledge and insights from the training.
The four-day masterclass, running from 12 to 15 June is organised by ICPAU.
Among the topics is: formulation of objectives & competences based on Bloom’s Taxonomy; content & activity selection, and organisation; teaching methods; characteristics of a 21st century teacher; skills of the 21st-century classroom; preparation for teaching; scheme of work & lesson plan; competence-based lesson plan development; lesson presentations with appropriate classroom communication; questioning techniques; principles of outstanding classroom control; instructional media; classroom management techniques; and teaching professional ethics and professionalism.
