INTEGRATED REPORTING: REDEFINING ORGANISATIONAL SUCCESS

Introduction

 

The overall aim of the Financial Reporting (FiRe) Awards is to enhance the quality of financial and business reporting in Uganda by encouraging the implementation of financial reporting standards as well as best practices in financial reporting. The Awards were introduced in 2011. Since inception, the FiRe Awards have impacted a number of organisations in the private, public and Non-Governmental Organisation sectors.

 

Objectives of the FiRe Awards

 

  • Encourage effective communication of financial and business information.
  • Showcase best practices in financial reporting.
  • Promote and institutionalise transparency, integrity, and accountability in the corporate reporting process.
  • Promote good financial reporting as a prerequisite for raising funds on the capital markets.
  • Encourage SMEs to embrace good financial reporting as a step to listing on the stock exchange.
  • Create public awareness of valid and objective measures of performance and promote a better understanding of the results achieved.
  • Create public awareness of the purposes of organizations, how they function and their achievements.

 

Who can participate in the Awards?

 

 

The FiRe Awards are open to any of the following entities that produce annual reports.

 

  1. Public sector entities:
  • Ministries, Departments and Agencies
  • Local Governments
  • Statutory bodies and commissions
  • State Enterprises

 

  1. Not-for-profit organisations

 

  1. Private sector organizations operating in but not limited to the following sectors:

 

  • Communications and IT
  • Community and Welfare
  • Education and Research
  • Financial Services
  • Recreationand Entertainment
  • Resources and Mining
  • Retail

 

  • Health and Medical Research
  • Infrastructure, Logistics and Transport
  • Manufacturing
  • Primary Industry
  • Professional Services and Trade Associations
  • Property and Construction
  • Public Administration

 

Each annual report is judged against itself, based on its success in communicating its organisation’s story. In order to be accepted for evaluation, the annual reports should cover any financial period ending within the year 2018.

 

Special Awards

 

Special Awards will be given for the following:

 

a) Excellence in Corporate Governance Reporting

b) Excellence in Sustainability Reporting

c) Excellence in Presentation and Communication

d) The Most Improved Report

e) The Best Listed Entity

f) Integrated Report of the Year (Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards)

 

Submission of Entries

 

For the purposes of submission of an entry into the Awards, an annual report means a document which contains the full audited annual financial statements together with information which enables an understanding of the nature, objectives, performance and achievements of the organisation.

 

Submission of entries can be made either directly online (via: fireawards@icpau.co.ug), or by sending three (3) hard copies of the Annual report (in its original form) to the address below:

An awards presentation dinner will be held at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Wednesday, 6 November 2019, 6.00pm

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU)

 

ICPAU is the national professional accountancy organization, established in 1992 by an Act of Parliament, now the Accountants Act, 2013. The functions of the Institute, as prescribed by the Act, are:

  1. To regulate and maintain the standard of accountancy in Uganda.
  2. To prescribe and regulate the conduct of accountants and practicing accountants in Uganda.

ICPAU offers three qualifications: the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) course, the Accounting Technician’s Diploma (ATD), and the Certified Tax Advisor (CTA).

 

USE

Uganda Securities Exchange (USE)

USE was licensed to operate as an approved Stock Exchange in June 1997 by the Capital Markets Authority of Uganda. The basic function of USE is to provide a facility for raising funds for investment in long-term assets. This is extremely important as it is the engine through which the stock exchange is driven. The USE began formal trading operations in January 1998 following the listing of its maiden instrument, the East African Development Bank (EADB) Bond.

 

CMA

Capital Markets Authority (CMA)

 

CMA was established in 1996, by the Capital Markets Authority Act, Cap 84. It is an autonomous body responsible for promoting, developing and regulating the capital markets industry in Uganda, with the overall objectives of investor protection and market efficiency.

The Authority reports and accounts to Government through the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. CMA plays a significant role in regional and international cooperation and is a member of the East African Securities Regulatory Authorities (EASRA) and the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO).

The New Vision (part of the Vision Group) is the official media sponsor of the 2013 Financial Reporting Awards (FiRe Awards) organized by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) and Capital Markets Authority (CMA). The Vision Group incorporated as the New Vision Printing & Publishing Company Limited (NVPPCL), started business in March 1986. It is a multimedia business housing newspaper, magazines, internet publishing, television, radio broadcasting, commercial printing, advertising and distribution services. NVPPCL is listed on the Uganda Stock Exchange.
