The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has launched the 6th edition of the Student Scholarship Programme. This was during an official ceremony held on 27 February 2024 at the Protea Hotel by Mariott Kampala Skyz.
The SSP is a financial aid programme for students who desire to study the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) course. The package covers ICPAU-related fees, namely, registration, annual studentship renewal, examination fees, and the cost of study material.
Bachelor’s Degree holders who completed their programmes in 2023 are eligible to apply. Applicants must possess qualifications awarded by public universities or private chartered universities and they must have attained a First Class Honours or Second Class Honours – Upper Division grade.
Applications for the 2024 Scholarships will close on 26 April 2024 and application is via www.icpau.co.ug. There are 10 slots.
During the same event, ICPAU also announced the fifth cohort, that is, winners of the 2023 scholarships. These beat 330 candidates who applied between April to June 2023. The students are scheduled to write their first examinations in May 2024, and they are required to complete the course within two and a half years.
While giving his remarks, CPA Charles Lutimba, Director Standards & Regulations at ICPAU noted that the Institute recognises talent, and therefore basing on the desire portrayed by the beneficiaries, they have the ability to acquire the qualification.
“ICPAU does not work in isolation. It is mandated to give back to the community in which it serves. Therefore, we want to help those who would like to acquire professional accountancy skills to get on board,” remarked CPA Lutimba.
According to CPA Josephine Okui Ossiya, the president of the ICPAU Council, the selections for the scholarship beneficiaries are made with a high degree of diversity in mind, considering all chartered universities in Uganda, as well as gender equality.
“The beneficiaries have acquired a unique opportunity, and are called upon to leverage it for vibrant professional accountancy careers. CPA will acquaint them with the technical and professional skills required for today’s dynamic job market, and for accountancy practice,” remarked CPA Josephine Okui.
The Guest speaker, CPA Doreen Mutebe, Chairperson of the African Federation of Institutes of Internal Auditors (AFIIA), congratulated the beneficiaries and cautioned them to work hard, pointing out that the accountancy career requires them to demonstrate what they can deliver.
“It is not about the designation that comes with acquiring the qualification, it is about the one’s demonstration of what they can do, with a high degree of professionalism and ethical standards,” noted CPA Mutebe.
The ICPAU Student Scholarship Programme was introduced in 2019, as part of the Institute’s Corporate Social Responsibility, to nurture young talent in the field of professional accountancy. The programme is in its sixth cycle and there are 50 students on the programme since inception.
